Simone M. Scully is a writer, editor, photographer, and playwright based in New York City.

Simone is currently an editor and writer at Upworthy. She writes about science, health, the environment, travel, social causes, animals, and the arts. Her work has also appeared on Business InsiderWeather.com, Nautilus, Audubon magazine, Narratively, Spectrum (Columbia's School of Social Work's magazine), WhatToExpect.com, and Inside New York

She is a graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she received her Master's degree in Journalism and was awarded the John Horgan Award for Critical Science Journalism.

Born in Minnesota, Simone moved to Toulouse, France when she was four years old. She lived in France for 14 years, until she moved to London to study International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. 

As a playwright, she writes under the pen name Simone Marie Martelle. She has an MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University's School of the Arts and is a company member of The Workshop Theater in New York City.  Her work has been performed at the San Francisco Fringe Festival, Manhattan Repertory Theater, 13th Street Repertory Theatre, the Hovey Players SummerFest, and at Curan Repertory Theatre.
